David Beckham is set for a long lay-off, and may miss the World Cup after tearing his achilles in Milan’s 1-0 victory over Chievo on sunday night.
The latest reports in Italy say that Beckham will now take a private flight to Finland where he will be operated on by renowned doctor Prof. Helmu Orawa. However it is unlikely to be enough to help him recover in time for the World Cup, with most reports suggesting a lay-off of between 3-6 months for the former England captain.
Beckham had started the match with Chievo, and played very effectively for much of the game, before appearing to lose his footing in the centre of midfield. Upon going to the sideline, he appeared in significant distress and told club doctors “it’s broken, it’s broken”. The news will come as a blow to Fabio Capello, who reportedly called Beckham immediately to offer his support.
Milan Coach Leonardo added after the game: “I cannot enjoy this evening considering this serious injury. David understood immediately that he had torn his Achilles tendon.”
