Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Arsenal. Today:
Gunners in for Xulu.
Arsenal are to bring 6ft 3in Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Siyanda Xulu in for a trial, with a view to making a permanent move. The 18-year-old will train with the Gunners during the first two weeks in October, and his current club are keen to do business. Sundowns Communications Manager Alex Shakoane is quoted on Imscouting.com as saying: “It is satisfying for us that the young man is being acknowledged and pursued by such esteemed teams. If Arsenal are happy with him talks will open between the parties involved.”
Points from Partizan.
Arsene Wenger has told of his delight at the Gunners’ performance in their 3-1 win over testing opposition Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League last night. Speaking to Arsenal.com, Wenger said: “Partizan gave us the game we expected – [they were] full of commitment, full of power on every break.” Goals from Andrey Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh either side of a Cleo penalty for Partizan sent the Gunners on their way at 2-1, before Sebastien Squillaci opened his account in North London to maintain Arsenal’s 100% start to their Champions League campaign.
Wenger, meanwhile, also took the opportunity to heap praise on goalkeeper Lucasz Fabianski, who had a fabulous match last night while standing in for the injured Manuel Almunia. The Pole went from zero to hero for the Gunners following a late penalty save, and quoted on Mirror Football Wenger said: “The Fabianski we saw tonight was the keeper we see in training and he had a faultless game. I knew a performance like that was in him, we just had to get it out of him. But that penalty save will lift his confidence and hopefully it will do him the world of good.”
