Neil Warnock has hailed his Leeds United players for their performance in beating Premier League side Everton and progressing through to the next stage of the Capital One Cup, the BBC has reported.
Goals from Aidan White and Rudolph Austin put the Championship outfit into a two-goal lead, with Everton centre-back Sylvain Distin heading a late consolation for David Moyes’ Toffees. Leeds though held firm to dump the in-form Merseysiders out of the competition.
Everton made a number of changes from their weekend win over Swansea City but still took a strong line-up to Elland Road, featuring the likes of midfielder Marouane Fellaini, Dutch international John Heitinga and summer signings Bryan Oviedo and Kevin Mirallas. Leeds however rose to the occasion and had Warnock singing their praises after the match.
Warnock said: “That is probably the top cup night [of my career]. This was a top Everton side. To play like we did was tremendous.” The former Queens Park Rangers manager added that the starting XI Moyes named confirmed he had come to Leeds with the intention of winning the contest, but Warnock praised his players for looking sharper than their opponents from the higher division.
