Everton look set to finalise pre-contract discussions with former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady to bring the Republic of Ireland international to Goodison Park, reports The Independent.
The 27-year-old, who currently plays in Russia for Spartak Moscow, has a contract which expires at the end of the season – allowing Everton to sign a man who has earned 63 international caps for nothing, though manager Roberto Martinez may negotiate a fee with Spartak to see McGeady join up with his new club this month.
Wages are thought to be the final stage of negotiations after weeks of discussions with the former Wigan boss, but the Toffees are still to agree a transfer fee with Spartak if McGeady is to move to Merseyside this month.
Once those hurdles are overcome, McGeady – who joined Spartak for a reported fee of around £9.5m in 2010 – could finally complete a deal which has been reported since before the transfer window opened on New Year’s Day.
The winger made 185 appearances and scored 31 goals during his time in Glasgow.
