Everton manager Roberto Martinez has told the Liverpool Echo that January signing Aiden McGeady is a ‘phenomenal’ player.
The Republic of Ireland international endured a slow start to life at Goodison Park as he had to work on fitness following months on the side-lines at former club Spartak Moscow after a disagreement saw him training with the club’s youth teams.
However the winger is now pushing for a first team place at his new club after getting up to speed as Everton look to push for European qualification.
Martinez said: “He has been putting in extra work, working really hard. It’s about him setting certain levels to make sure he’s fully fit soon. I think when he is he’ll take us to a different level in terms of our forward play.
“With Aiden we had to start from scratch in terms of building up the fitness levels that he needed and we can already see he’s a phenomenal player. He has great technical ability and it’s important to get him feeling sharp so he can show that.”
McGeady has made a total of seven appearances so far for the Toffees and as he approaches full fitness will offer yet another attacking option to an exciting Everton squad.
The player will be hoping to feature in Saturday’s home clash with West Ham, the first of three Goodsion fixtures coming up as they look to regain lost ground on top four challengers Tottenham and Liverpool.
And Martinez is hoping a prolonged spell at home will help his side, having lost just once all season there.
He added: “It will be really important. Whenever we’ve gone away and had a little disappointment in terms of the scoreline we do enjoy coming back to Goodison and getting the feeling of our fans behind us again.”
