Wayne Rooney has not yet signed a new long-term Manchester United contract, the Daily Telegraph has reported, but the England striker is expected to put pen-to-paper soon.
The deal will tie Rooney down to the Premier League champions until the summer of 2019 and make the former Everton forward the highest-paid player in the history of English football. The Telegraph puts Rooney’s wage at £300,000 per week.
A deal has been agreed in principle, the newspaper adds, but not yet signed. It was thought the contract would be finalised by the end of January and with Rooney in Dubai with the rest of the United squad, it’s said to be unlikely the deal will be completed until the player returns to Manchester.
Rooney attempted to leave Old Trafford last summer after falling out with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Chelsea made two approaches for Rooney but both were rebuffed.
Jose Mourinho had retained hope Rooney would move to Stamford Bridge but is now expected to turn to Diego Costa, the Atletico Madrid forward.
