England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that he will rest Leighton Baines, and use Wednesday’s friendly against Denmark to assess his other options at left-back, Ashley Cole and Luke Shaw, writes BBC Sport.
Baines looks set to be England’s first-choice for the left-back position at this summer’s World Cup, and Hodgson may use this friendly to decide who should accompany the Everton man on the plane to Brazil.
Cole has lost his place in the Chelsea team to Cesar Azpilicueta, and has not appeared in the Premier League since January 11, but his years of experience of playing for England may see him included in the 23-man squad, which will be chosen in May.
The form of Shaw has led many to insist that the teenager should go to the World Cup. The 18-year-old has started all 28 of Southampton’s Premier League games this season, and is very highly-rated.
Hodgson said: “It’s the right moment to look at one of, or both, Luke and Ashley. Unless we get an incredible number of injuries, Leighton won’t feature. All three of them want to play, but even with substitutions I can’t fit in three left-backs. The two I need to look at in an England shirt are Ashley and Luke.”
