Manchester City’s players are the best paid team in global sport, according to a new study, BBC Sport reports.
ESPN The Magazine and Sportingintelligence carried out research which found City to pay an average annual wage bill of £5.3 million to its first-team players, more than Major League Baseball teams New York Yankees and the LA Dodgers.
Out of the top ten club that pay large amounts of average annual wages, six were football clubs, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea involved.
Further back from that, other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool also made the top 20 places.
“The Global Sports Salaries Survey looks solely at earnings for playing sport, not for endorsements or other extra-curricular activities,” states the Sportingintelligence website.
“The 2014 report considers 294 teams in 15 leagues in 12 countries across seven different sports: football, baseball, basketball, gridiron, cricket, ice hockey and Aussie Rules football. The report looks at numbers from either current or most recently completed seasons, depending on availability of accounts and other information.”
Chelsea sit at the bottom of the top 10 with an average wage per player of £3.984 million, compared to City in first place with a staggering £5.337 million.
Manchester City are currently under investigation from UEFA over a possible breach of the Financial Fair Play rules and await a decision and possibly a punishment in the next few days.
