Manchester United are edging closer to the signing of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, with the Belgian having agreed personal terms with the Red Devils, according to Talksport.
The deal is now dependent on whether the two clubs can agree a fee, with Arsenal’s asking price believed to be around £10m, for a player who has just one year remaining on his current contract. The North London club are willing to allow Vermaelen to leave.
The 28-year-old has found himself out of favour at the Emirates Stadium in the last year and-a-half, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker having struck a successful central defensive partnership. As a result, he has been looking to move on, after making 150 appearances and scoring 15 goals in five years at Arsenal.
He is set to join a Man Utd side that is looking to add new faces to its defence, after the departures of experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the end of last season. Vermaelen would become Louis van Gaal’s third signing since becoming manager, after Athletic Bilbao playmaker Ander Herrera and Southampton left-back Luke Shaw.
