Sassuolo president Giorgio Squinzi has confirmed rumours that a Premier League club has shown significant interest in striker Simone Zaza, Football Italia has reported.
“There is a concrete manifestation of interest from an English Premier League club for Zaza,” he said. “It is strong interest, though we haven’t discussed financial terms yet.”
The club in question is likely to be Tottenham, with rumours in recent weeks having suggested that officials from both clubs met in London earlier in March to discuss a possible summer move for the in-form frontman, who has eight goals and two assists in Serie A this season.
Zaza’s recent performances earned him his first start for the Italian national team for the 2-2 draw away to Bulgaria on Saturday in Euro 2016 qualifying. He failed to score before being taken off on the hour mark in favour of Eder, who grabbed the late equaliser for the four-time World Cup winners.
Tottenham are keen to add to their striking department this season with the futures of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado under increasing doubt. Should they both move on, Harry Kane would be the only senior forward available to manager Mauricio Pochettino. Zaza is likely to cost £15m, while Juventus have first option to sign the 23-year-old.
