After missing out on West Ham United’s Winston Reid, Tottenham are considering making a summer bid to sign defender Toby Alderweireld, who is on loan at Southampton from Atletico Madrid, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Reid looked set to move on in the summer after talks over a new contract with West Ham appeared to continually stall, only for the New Zealand international to unexpectedly agree a new six and-a-half year deal during the week. Tottenham had been one of the front-runners to sign a player that has become increasingly in demand since moving to England in 2010.
Southampton have the option to buy Alderweireld for £6.8m when his loan finishes at the end of the season, but Atletico are able to buy out that clause for £1.5m and then sell to the highest bidder. Should that be the case, the Belgian is likely to cost Spurs something in the region of £10m.
He has been a key player for Southampton this season, helping them achieve the best defensive record in the Premier League. He has recently returned to fitness following six weeks out through injury, but has impressed both in defence and in midfield.
Tottenham head of recruitment Paul Mitchell was brought to the club from Southampton and was a key player in the deal which saw Alderweireld move to St. Mary’s. This potential deal comes as manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to offload some fringe defenders in the summer, including Vlad Chiriches and Younes Kaboul.
