Everton defender Phil Jagielka has revealed England manager Roy Hodgson is much more of a laid back coach than predecessor Fabio Capello was during his time in charge of the Three Lions, reports BBC Sport.
“There can be too many rules. If Fabio didn’t want anyone to have ketchup there was no ketchup. Roy allows us ketchup if we want. I’m not going to slag (Capello) off. He’s had fantastic success with that style during his managerial career, but it was difficult sometimes. You’d walk past him and not know where you stood. It would make the weeks a bit more difficult. You’d be on eggshells sometimes,” said the Everton captain.
Roy Hodgson was appointed England manager in 2012, following Capello’s resignation from the post. The Italian coach was known for his dictator-like control of the players, and long list of rules that the squad had to abide by. One rule of which was not allowing ketchup or to drink any alcohol. Capello was also against the players having their spouses present with them in the hotels, and Phil Jagielka admits Hodgson has been the polar opposite to the former boss at England.
The 67-year-old has been credited for creating a good atmosphere in the game, with Hodgson being regarded as a well-liked individual, as well as one easy to approach. The England manager is said to have plenty of time for his players, and will often engage in conversation, so there’s no ambiguity about his thoughts and feelings. Jagielka admits how difficult it was under Capello, due to the manager’s authoritarian style in his four years with the Three Lions.
(Hodgson) is a very likeable person and a good man-manager. He will come and speak to you. You know where you stand rather than having to second-guess things. If you’ve got a problem, he’s very approachable. We’ve got characters in the squad now. It helps that they’re allowed to be themselves when we go away. You can see there’s a good spirit in the squad,” Jagielka added.
