Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could make a £12m offer for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling as he looks to revitalise the team’s defence, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Wenger was beaten to Smalling’s signature by United when the England international left Fulham in January 2010 but has maintained his interest in the 25-year-old, who will be into the final year of his contract at Old Trafford by the start of next season.
Smalling has thus far delayed signing a new deal with no talks yet held and Wenger is keen to bolster his defensive options, while Smalling’s home-grown status is also attractive to the long-serving boss.
It’s thought that Germany international Per Mertesacker could leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, potentially paving the way for Smalling to return to London. He played fewer than 20 games for the Cottagers before moving to United, and, to date, has featured almost 150 times for the Red Devils. He also has 15 England caps.
