Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted his team are set for the Premier League title, ESPN has reported, rating the current state of the top of the table as the most advantageous to the Blues all season.
Mourinho’s team are six points clear of champions Manchester City with a game in hand, having nine games to play to City’s eight. The manager has said that while Chelsea have this season held larger leads, the low number of games remaining to be played means the situation is in their favour.
“Now we are in the best position since the beginning of the season,” he told the Chelsea website. “The maximum lead we had was eight points, but when we had eight points [earlier in the season] we were speaking about 20 matches to go. Now we have six points [lead] with one match in hand and with 24 possible points for our opponents to win.”
Chelsea saw off Hull City on Sunday, taking a two-goal lead only to be pegged back by the Tigers, before Loic Remy sealed the three points. The day before City beat 10-man West Bromwich Albion 3-0 with goals from Wilfried Bony, Fernando and David Silva.
The London club play their game in hand on April 29, away at the league’s bottom side Leicester City, and also have to play third-place Arsenal and fourth-place Manchester United, as well as Champions League hopefuls Liverpool, before the end of the season.
