Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli will be absent for the Reds’ meeting with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium this evening through illness, reports BBC Sport.
The Italian international has endured a difficult season with Liverpool since his surprise summer move from AC Milan, and he’s failed to force his way into the starting eleven as a result. Balotelli has been singled out for criticism on many occasions by pundits as well as his manager, and his chances of game time further diminished following the return of first-choice striker Daniel Sturridge through injury.
Manager Brendan Rodgers appears to have finally stumbled a formation that brings the best out of Liverpool’s attacking talents, and Balotelli doesn’t appear to fit the system. He’s struggled for goals ever since signing, and didn’t travel with the squad for tonight’s team. He is expected to be fit to face Manchester United the following weekend, however.
In his absence this evening, Rodgers has a decision to make about Sturridge, as he’s been hesitant to start the England international too soon, instead allowing Raheem Sterling to spearhead the attack. Balotelli’s absence changes little of Liverpool’s expected lineup against Swansea.
