Louis van Gaal has suggested Manchester United will have to wait to see the best form of former Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Di Maria moved to United from Madrid late in the summer transfer window, United spending in the region of £59m on the Argentina international. Di Maria, part of the Madrid side that won the Champions League in 2013-14 and the Argentina team that finished as runners-up to Germany in the World Cup, has struggled with injury and been unable to put together a consistent run of form, making 23 appearances for United and scoring four goals, the last of which came in early January against Yeovil Town in an FA Cup fixture.
The 27-year-old was substituted at half-time of United’s win over Sunderland last weekend and when asked about the contribution of the player, van Gaal admitted Di Maria hasn’t been at his best but advised against snap judgements of his value. “It counts for all the players that we bought, the first season is always difficult,” said van Gaal. “You can see it with every player we have bought. Shaw, Blind, Herrera and Falcao and Di Maria – so it is not a big surprise.
“It is more a surprise if you adapt quickly,” he added. “When I was in Germany, Dutch and Spain I had the same experience with players. We need to give him and all the player’s time and wait and see.”
