With the West Ham squad travelling to Dubai while they have a break from games in the Premier League, midfielder Stewart Downing believes the idea for the players to get away will be a big benefit for the business end to the season, reports Sky Sports.
West Ham have been suffering a real slump in form of late, and it has threatened to derail their slim hopes of finishing in a Europa League place in the table. The likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton are in the running to finish above West Ham now after their poor form. Manager Sam Allardyce looked to have found the remedy to get results using a more attractive style of play this season, inning focus on two strikers and a midfield quartet in a diamond shape.
It saw the Hammers enjoying a strong top-half place in the first-half of the season, but things have fallen apart since. United have picked up just one league win in their last 11 Premier League games, and are slowly slipping into the bottom-half of the table. Allardyce’s future is at stake if the Hammers fail to improve, and Stewart Downing believes their trip to Dubai will be perfect to get their season back on track.
“I think it’s good for us to get away at this time of year. A lot of countries do have a winter break, so a couple of days’ rest means we can recover and get ready for the next game. I think we needed a break.”
“We had a lot of games with the FA Cup and obviously the Premier League. I hope it will help us to end strongly and do better than we did last year and finish in the top 10 if we can. The team bonding part of it is good for the lads and it’s nice for the new boys to get involved with the lads too.”
