Shakhtar Donetsk star Douglas Costa has openly spoken of his desire to leave Ukraine in favour of a move to Premier League leaders Chelsea, Sky Sports has reported.
The Blues have been linked with the Brazilian in recent months, reportedly offering £20m for his services. Should they try again to sign him in the summer, it is likely to take an even greater amount of money for Shakhtar to be persuaded to sell, as he has a release clause of €50m.
The 24-year-old Costa has been at Shakhtar for over five years, helping them win the Ukrainian league in every season until now as well as three domestic cups. Mainly used as a right winger, he has scored 36 goals and claimed 38 assists in his 191 appearances since moving to the Donbass Arena.
But in an interview with the FourFourTwo magazine, Costa has revealed his desire to move to West London, citing the chance to play under manager Jose Mourinho and reunite with former teammate Willian as the two main reasons. He said: “I’d be really interested in moving to Chelsea because I’d be able to achieve everything I want having someone like Jose Mourinho by my side.
“There comes a time when you become sick and tired of playing in the same league. I’m 24 and I think that it’s worth trying to convince them to let me go away. It’s time to try a new philosophy and I’m sure Mourinho’s is the best around. He’s always fighting for trophies.
“I’ve also got Willian in London – he’s a friend for life. “[If I moved to England] I’d have the chance to play in the Premier League, the best league in the world.’
