Chelsea striker Diego Costa has revealed that he almost joined Liverpool in the summer of 2013 – a year before he made the move to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid, reports Goal.com.
The Spaniard’s stock was rising as Liverpool tabled a £23m bid in 2013, despite the presence of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez as a prolific striking duo. Costa turned down the chance to go to Merseyside in favour of signing a new contract with Atletico and then went on to help the club win the La Liga title and reach the final of the Champions League.
Explaining his decision to stay in the Spanish capital, Costa says: “I was close to leaving Atletico. Liverpool are a great team, but after fighting so hard and overcoming difficulties to get my place at Atletico, how could I leave? I thought it was very important to keep growing with Atletico and to play there for many years.”
However, he was to leave the Vicente Calderon just a year after committing his future to Atletico, joining Chelsea in a £32m deal in June 2014. The 26-year-old has managed to score 17 goals in 21 Premier League appearances, but has often been a controversial figure, receiving a three-match ban for stamping on Emre Can in a Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool.
