Schalke 04 have completed the signing of on-loan Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic on a permanent basis, the Manchester Evening News has reported.
The Serbian international has made nine appearances for the club since joining on loan in January, with Schalke having activated a clause in the player’s contract in order to bring him to Gelsenkirchen on a four-year contract.
The 21-year-old’s move comes as a result of falling out of favour at Man City, whom he joined in the summer of 2012 and helped them to second place the following season, with then-manager Roberto Mancini often preferring him to Joleon Lescott in the battle to play alongside captain Vincent Kompany at centre-back.
He was a part of the team in the early months of last season under Manuel Pellegrini, but a number of injury setbacks as well as the arrivals of Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala have seen first-team opportunities become increasingly limited. His last appearance for City came in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal back in August.
Lying fifth in the Bundeliga and under the stewardship of former Chelsea star Roberto Di Matteo, Schalke exited the Champions League on Tuesday despite winning 4-3 in the second leg of their last 16 tie against Real Madrid.
