Chelsea are weighing up a bumper bid to sign Real Madrid’s central defender Raphael Varane, with the Blues looking for a long-term replacement for veteran centre-back John Terry, reports the Express.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho knows the Frenchman well from his time with the Spanish La Liga giants, and believes he could well be convinced to move if guaranteed first-team football with the Londoners next season. John Terry has already been told that he will remain with Chelsea in 2015/16, but it’s unknown in what capacity. Kurt Zouma has shone in the backline this season, but is still young and in need of time before he can force his way into the defence on a regular basis.
Varane is a young defender, but has played far more games in the Real Madrid backline at the top level in all competitions, and has shown he has all the hallmarks to be a top centre-back in the future. Game time has been limited at times for him in Spain, with Pepe and Sergio Ramos being the two preferred choices in the Real defence, which could lead Chelsea to make a strong offer in the summer to force him to make a big-money switch.
