Everton defender Leighton Baines is confident club & international teammate Ross Barkley can silence his critics and come into some form at the business end to the season, after putting in an impressive cameo display for the national team in the 1-1 draw against Italy, reports Sky Sports.
Barkley has come under a lot of criticism this season following a host of poor performances. His club manager Roberto Martinez has continue to defend him, as the England international shone for Everton last season. The defence was vindicated against Italy, as Barkley’s arrival in the second-half saw the game swing England’s way.
The Everton midfielder was typically full of running, and was relentlessly going forward when in possession. His influence led to England equalising, and Barkley’s performance justified his selection in the national team. Baines, who has played closely with Barkley for club and county, believes the youngster can use his Italy performance as a platform to build on for next season. He defended the 21-year-old’s slump in form, and believes he can quickly put it behind him.
“Unfortunately if you’re a good young talent in England the media will put you under a lot pressure, that’s happened to Ross. He’s going to have ups and downs. He’s still in development years to an extent and we just need to get him through that and not put him under too much pressure,” he said.
