Former Manchester United player Eric Cantona believes the Red Devils can genuinely challenge for the Premier League title next season, after having finally got their revenge against fierce rivals Manchester City last weekend, reports BBC Sport.
The Frenchman says Manchester United are now the top side in the city, after ending a four year wait to beat their closest rivals, and is backing them to go all the way in the Premier League next season as a result. Cantona was full of praise for manager Louis Van Gaal, who he feels has proven to be the right appointment at the club, and believes City’s failure to retain the title could be down to behind the scenes involvement into the running of the club.
“Now (Man Utd )are the kings of the city. Sometimes you have a season when you lose games and you finish fourth or fifth. Next year they can win (the title). You can buy the best players but when you have a great academy, a great generation, nobody can beat it because they have played together since they were 14 years old,” he said.
This season, Manchester United and Arsenal are now fighting it out for second place in the Premier League, while holding out slim hope of winning the title. Chelsea are the team to beat, and still have both clubs to face before the campaign comes to and end, so it’s certainly possible. United’s rise under van Gaal has been impressive, with the Red Devils having been formidable on home soil of late, while getting the best from their previously much-maligned stars.
