Premier League leaders Chelsea are watching Jordan Henderson’s situation at Liverpool after the midfielder rejected the offer of a contract extension, the Daily Express has reported.
Liverpool vice-captain Henderson will be in the final year of his current deal as of this summer and the Reds were keen on tying down the England international, offering Henderson terms that would see him paid £80,000 per week. But Henderson is understood to have delayed any deal amid speculation Chelsea will make an approach for the former Sunderland man.
The impasse comes at the same time Liverpool are embroiled in a contract stand-off with Raheem Sterling, who turned down the club’s offer to extend his deal, which has two years to run as of this summer.
Henderson moved to Anfield from Wearside in 2011, having played 79 times for the Black Cats since his senior debut in the 2008-09 season. He has to date featured 177 times for Liverpool, scoring 20 times, and has 20 England caps to his name. The 24-year-old is expected to assume the Liverpool captaincy as of next season when current skipper Steven Gerrard leaves the club for MLS side LA Galaxy.
