Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed striker Diego Costa is closing in on a return from injury, ESPN has reported, while Loic Remy could play this weekend against Manchester United.
Costa is expected to begin training at the start of next week, having been struggling with a hamstring problem picked up in the 2-1 home win over Stoke City on April 4. The Spain international had to be substituted against the Potters and hasn’t played since, but could be involved when the Blues play Arsenal on April 26.
“Diego is progressing very well. I think he has a chance for next weekend,” Mourinho revealed. “Our target was for him to play the last four matches, so if he doesn’t play against Arsenal it’s not a problem because we were always focusing on the last four.
“But things are going well,” he continued. “He’s training, he starts training with the rest of the squad next week.”
Mourinho added that Remy, who sat out the 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, has a ‘better than 50-50 chance’ of taking to the field against United. United, meanwhile, are expected to be without Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Michael Carrick.
Chelsea are seven points clear of second-place Arsenal but have seven games to play compared to the Gunners’ six. They are eight ahead of United, who are third, and 12 clear of defending champions Manchester City.
