Carles Gil is seeking talks with Tim Sherwood over his Aston Villa future, the Daily Telegraph has reported, after failing to win a place under the new manager.
Gil moved to the Premier League from Valencia in the January transfer window, signed by Sherwood’s predecessor, Paul Lambert. Gil joined in the middle but Lambert was sacked a month later and Sherwood has largely overlooked the former Spain Under-21 international, whose only appearances under the ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss have come in the defeat to Stoke City, where he played an hour, and the win over West Bromwich Albion, in which he was a last minute substitute.
It’s suggested that Sherwood sees Gil, a £3.2m signing, as a luxury player, not suited to helping Villa in their fight against relegation. The Midlands club are currently 16th in the Premier League table with four games to go, two points clear of 18th-place Sunderland, who also have a game in hand.
Gil, it’s thought, will have to wait until the summer to regain a place under Sherwood as, should relegation be avoided and the club remain in the top flight for next season, former England international Sherwood will run the rule over the squad he inherited from Lambert.
