Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hinted of interest in PSV Eindhoven forward Memphis Depay when asked if the Merseyside club were going to make an approach this summer, reports Sky Sports.
The Dutch international has enjoyed a fantastic season in the Eredivisie, helping Eindhoven to the league title. He’s been in fire form in front of goal, which has led to interest from the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool feel confident they can convince a player of his calibre to the side, but also need to ensure they are going in the right direction.
Depay would hardly chose Liverpool if they aren’t in the Champions League next season, as other interested parties will be, but Rodgers is convinced the Reds can still attract big names to Anfield. The 21-year-old is certainly one of the brightest talents in Europe, scoring 21 goals in 28 games, but PSV won’t let him go for cheap, and they will likely play the suitors against each other to raise the price.
With Liverpool so desperate for attacking talent following their lack of goals compared to 2013/14, Rodgers did hint towards having an interest for the Dutchman. He said: “I wouldn’t like to confirm either way (about Depay). The kid is a very talented player. There’s going to be a whole raft of players that I’m sure will be looked at and then it will be up to the club if they’re affordable and available.”
“It’s clear we need the goal threat for next year. We’ve identified that a striker is a priority but we’ll have to see availability first and then take it from there.”
