Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is waiting on the fitness of striker Daniel Sturridge ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa, Sky Sports has reported.
Sturridge missed the Reds’ 2-0 win over Newcastle on Monday night after picking up a knock in the FA Cup quarter-final victory against Blackburn Rovers. The win at Ewood Park was only Sturridge’s 18th appearance of an injury-hit season, having missed a significant portion of the season between September and January.
Rodgers confirmed Sturridge’s absence prior to kick-off against the Magpies but couldn’t give an estimate on when the former Chelsea forward would be ready to return to action. “He will hopefully be ok for the weekend,” he said. “I will know more in the week.
“He feels reasonably fine so we are hoping by the middle of the week we will have an indication where he is at.”
Liverpool were also without Mario Balotelli against Newcastle, due to illness, and Mamadou Sakho, who faces a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, but goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen were enough to down John Carver’s side.
Championship outfit Reading and FA Cup holders Arsenal compete in the other semi-final, both to be played at Wembley, with Liverpool looking for a first FA Cup trophy since 2006.
