Everton manager Roberto Martinez should have striker Romelu Lukaku back available for the weekend’s Premier League fixture with Burnley, the club’s official website has reported, while midfielder Leon Osman is also in contention.
Lukaku has missed the Toffees’ last two games, the 1-0 home win over Southampton and the 1-1 away draw at Swansea City, after he suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-1 away triumph at Queens Park Rangers in late March. But the Belgium international returned to training this week and Martinez told a Press conference that Lukaku had looked sharp in practice and is the kind of personality who needs to be on the football pitch.
“He trained really well on Tuesday and yesterday he had a very good response to the work we did,” Martinez said. “I expect him to train today and go through the next two sessions with no problems. If that’s the case, then he will be available for the squad at the weekend, although that doesn’t mean that he is ready to play 90 minutes.
“If I am completely honest I think he has been suffering a lot in the last seven to 10 days that he has been away from the team,” the former Wigan Athletic boss added. “Someone like Rom needs to be on the football pitch. He is only 21 and I don’t think there is any need for that [a rest] at all.”
Osman, meanwhile, has been carrying a groin problem but Martinez indicated a decision on his involvement against the Clarets would be left as late as possible, while Bryan Oviedo is back in training although won’t feature at the weekend. Aiden McGeady is also said to have recovered from a back problem, leaving only Tony Hibbert and Darron Gibson on Everton’s injured list.
Everton are 12th with six games of the season to go, 12 points clear of the bottom three and five points short of climbing into the top half. They still have to play Manchester United, Aston Villa, Sunderland, West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur after the visit of Sean Dyche’s side.
