Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Newcastle United can still be dragged into a relegation fight following their poor form in the Premier League. He feels if results go against the Magpies this weekend, United should be worrying about retaining their top-flight status.
Newcastle have lost six Premier League games on the bounce, which has seen them slipping down the table at speed at the tail-end of the season. Manager John Carver has struggled for results ever since taking over, and a lack of goals has been prevalent in 2015 too. The Magpies have only picked up two wins in 14 games, and they are currently in danger of losing ground above the drop zone, with side below them having a game in hand.
If results don’t go their way this weekend, the likes of Leicester City could really put pressure on the North-East side, with the Foxes able to come out of the bottom-three, and Newcastle to be looking over their shoulder. Carver previously admitted his side are somewhat in a relegation battle, and their lack of wins will be a real worry at a crucial time of the season.
Paul Merson believes United could still go down, saying: “Newcastle are in disarray, absolute disarray. They need to win a football game and win one fast. I have to say I do think they’re in danger of getting into trouble. It’s difficult to see where (a win) is going to come from.”
