Jose Mourinho has questioned the number of Chelsea players named in the PFA Team of the Year, the Daily Telegraph has reported, and said the XI wouldn’t win the Premier League title because it doesn’t include Cesc Fabregas.
There were six Chelsea players voted into the team by their fellow professionals – John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, who was also crowned the PFA Player of the Year at Sunday’s awards ceremony.
Mourinho – who admitted he is biased in his assessment – questioned the selection, however, and said that tactically, the team didn’t stand a chance. “Yes. All,” Mourinho replied when asked if there should have been more players in the PFA team. “But I know that this is the Chelsea manager speaking, and, obviously, I respect every one of the players in that team, and especially everyone that chose.
“Just as an example, the season Fabregas is having, the number of assists and quality of his game – not to be there is a bit strange,” he continued. “And I think that team wouldn’t win the Premier League. Because that team is four defenders, Matic and only five to attack. So it’s a team without any balance. That team is missing a midfield player, and I think that midfield player should be Fabregas.”
Mourinho added however that it wasn’t an issue worth getting worked up about, as his attention is on securing the points Chelsea need to land a first Premier League title since the 2009-10 season. “This is not important. I look now as a fan not a manager,” he acknowledged. “It looks like I’m in a pub discussing things that aren’t important, because the important thing is to be champions.”
Chelsea are 10 points clear of Arsenal and current champions Manchester City with five games to play, and will wrap up their second piece of silverware of the season – after victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Capital One Cup – by beating Leicester City and Crystal Palace in their next games.
