Newcastle attacking-midfielder Siem De Jong is targeting a return to first-team action later this month, after successfully having recovered from a thigh tear and collapsed lung. He’s recently played for the reserves, and is hoping to play some small part in the first-team in April, reports Sky Sports.
The former Ajax captain has endured a nightmare of a debut season, picking up his thigh injury during training in September. At the time, he was ruled out of action for six months, but had another setback after suffering a collapsed lung for the second time in his career. Newcastle next face Tottenham in the Premier League, and De Jong could well feature in some capacity.
The 26-year-old has played for Newcastle’s reserves, and skippered them in their recent game against Derby County U21s. He’s completed his surgery, and could be making his return at a time where Newcastle are in pieces. Supporters are planning a protest against the club’s owner, and the form of the Magpies is among the worst in the league – five consecutive defeats.
But De Jong is just delighted to be back available for Newcastle, as big things were expected of him following his impressive career at Ajax. On making his return, he said: “I don’t think I could play 90 minutes in the coming weeks, so it will be maybe as a substitute at the end of the game, but I don’t know if I will be on the bench. We haven’t discussed yet when I’ll be back.”
“But I hope Swansea. I don’t know yet if Tottenham would be a good time, but I hope to be back on the bench against Swansea, depending on how it goes in the coming days and depending on how I feel tomorrow after today. I haven’t repaid the fans a lot this season, so I hope to be playing a couple of games, maybe, at the end of the season. I have to focus on next season, and be really fit then and hopefully I can show the fans what I can do, and show myself and show my team-mates what I can do.”
