Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits the clubs’ struggles of late are his responsibility, after the Premier League holders were comprehensively beaten by fierce rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on the weekend, reports BBC Sport.
The Chilean manager wouldn’t discuss his job security, but did admit that their failure ultimately comes down to him as he picks the team. Manchester City started brightly in the game, playing with real attacking threat and intensity, but they soon dipped midway into the first-half, with United dominating proceedings.
It capped a poor year for Manchester City, and Pellegrini admitted that he needs to shoulder the blame. He has remained faithful to a host of under-fire players that continue to disappoint, and that means it will be his head in the firing line if things don’t go the way they were supposed to. His position is under real threat when the camaign comes to a close.
Manchester City latest defeat was their fourth away defeat in a row, and sees their hopes of finishing in the top-four of the Premier League in doubt if Liverpool and Southampton can take advantage. In the interview after the game, Pellegrini was quoted as saying: “It is my responsibility and the only way we can change this is by winning games. I am not talking about my position. It is not important.”
