Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini wants the Premier League champions to flex their financial muscle this summer and make ‘big name’ signings, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
City, down to fourth ahead of Monday night’s match against Crystal Palace after a weekend in which both Arsenal and Manchester United won, are nine points adrift of league leaders Chelsea prior to their trip to Selhurst Park.
It’s been suggested that Pellegrini could be sacked by the Etihad Stadium hierarchy should City end the season without a trophy but Pellegrini is already considering the kind of players the team needs to add at the end of the season in order to compete for the title once more.
“It is just the way of thinking, that big teams need to sign a big player,” said the Chilean, formerly of Villarreal, Real Madrid and Malaga. “It is very difficult to do it every year – but every two years you must do it.
“I’m not just talking about Manchester City,” added Pellegrini. “You see Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich – all the big clubs – all do it. It is important to have big names.
“I repeat, it is very difficult to do it every year, but it is important to do it after two years and you must try, always, to improve your squad. I’m talking about all big teams, not especially Manchester City.”
The summer of 2014 saw City add the likes of Willy Caballero, the goalkeeper who played under Pellegrini at Malaga, and Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala to the squad that won the title. City also added Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony to their ranks in the January transfer window.
Pellegrini added however that while he has ideas for the summer, his focus is on the end of the current campaign. “I repeat, I don’t want to talk about [plans] for next season because we have to finish this season,” he stressed. “It is very important the way we finish this season before we analyse all the players. So, it is not the right moment to talk about it.
