Fernando Torres has singled out Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as the best player he has ever played with, ESPN has reported.
Torres in an interview with Marca Plus was asked about the illustrious list of players he has called teammates. The Atletico Madrid striker was questioned who was the ‘perfect’ player and the name that came to mind was Gerrard, who will leave Anfield this summer for the LA Galaxy.
“It’s difficult to say as I have had the good fortune to play with so many great players,” Torres began. “For me the best is, and has been, Gerrard. I would choose him, above all, to have him behind me in my team.”
Torres and Gerrard were teammates for more than three season between 2007 and January 2011, at which point Torres quit the Reds for a move to Chelsea. He later moved on loan to Milan, spending six months in Italy before returning to boyhood club Atletico.
The 31-year-old scored 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool, helping the side – then led by Rafael Benitez – to second place in the 2008-09 season, his second at the club. Manchester United ended the year as champions, with Liverpool in four points adrift, while Torres claimed 14 league goals.
