Manchester United are moving closer to securing a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan for a mooted fee of £20.5m, according to the Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, and he is expected to be part of what is likely to be another summer of big spending as they look to regain the Premier League title next season. Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne and prolific PSV Eindhoven forward Memphis Depay are among the other players heavily linked.
Gundogan, who is seen by United as a potential successor to Michael Carrick in the centre of the field, is looking increasingly likely to leave the Westfalenstadion. Dortmund would be open to a sale in order to avoid the possibility of the player leaving for free when his contract expires in the summer of 2016.
Louis van Gaal has had Gundogan watched extensively and the two clubs are believed to be in advanced talks over a possible move. The Germany international has scored nine times in 75 Bundesliga appearances since joining from Nuremberg in 2011. He also netted a penalty in the 2013 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
