Ahead of Barcelona’ Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, summer-signing Luis Suarez says he joined the club for nights like these in the prestigious European competition, reports Sky Sports.
Liverpool sold Luis Suarez for around £65M in the summer to Barcelona, and the Uruguayan has enjoyed a dream debut campaign. He’s scored 16 goals and made 10 assists in 27 games in all competitions for the Catalan giants, and has been impressive in the Champions League too (5 games, 4 goals, 1 assist). He could have left Liverpool a year before his eventual exit, but was convinced by manager Brendan Rodgers to get the Merseysiders into the Champions League.
He fulfilled his part of the promise, and made the club a lot of money with his sale. This season, Suarez has been involved in big European games already against Premier League holders Manchester City, Dutch Eredivisie holders Ajax, and French Ligue 1 holders Paris Saint-Germain (group stages). He admitted that his exit from Liverpool came down to the fact that the Reds wouldn’t enjoy good success in the competition this season, whereas Barcelona are expected to goall the way.
“Barcelona are always a candidate to win the Champions League. That’s a plus here, as the clubs I’ve played for before didn’t really have the chance to win big (European) trophies – maybe a domestic league or cup,” he said.
“Playing in a team like this, where all the players want to win every match and everything, that is a sign that it’s all about silverware – whether it’s the Champions League, the Liga or whichever trophy’s available. We have a chance of making the final.”
