PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands has revealed that Liverpool are ahead of arch rivals Manchester United in the race to sign starlet Memphis Depay, the Liverpool Echo is reporting.
Along with French giants Paris St. Germain, the two clubs have shown considerable interest in signing the 21-year-old, whom PSV are resigned to losing in the summer. His 21 goals this season have fired the club to their first Eredivisie title since 2008, and led to him becoming one of the most highly-regarded young strikers in Europe.
It is thought that Man Utd’s likely qualification for next season’s Champions League ahead of Liverpool would be a key factor in deciding Depay’s summer destination, as well as his previous experience of playing under Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal for the Dutch national team. The asking price is £20m.
However, Brands claims that Liverpool – who have already confirmed that they will look to sign at least one striker in the summer – are in more advanced negotiations with PSV over a deal for Depay. He said: “PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest.
“The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks. But Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him. It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player, but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that.’
