Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Arsenal have to challenge for the Premier League title next season, given the players they now have in attack, coupled with their impressive form in 2015 and resources they’ll b given in the summer to recruit even more stellar talent.
Merson, a former Arsenal midfielder, says his ex-club still need to spend in the summer, but believes their impressive run of form this year has to count for something next season. He feels it isn’t good enough for Arsenal to go on long winning runs in the Premier League but still finish a considerable distance from the title-winners come the end of the campaign.
Arsenal could finish in their highest league position for a decade if they can toppled Manchester City to come second, so the natural progression is to push Chelsea much closer for next season’s title, and they certainly have the players to achieve that. With manager Arsene Wenger having signed the likes of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid and Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, the Gunners are certainly strengthening year after year.
Merson believes next season is time for the Londoners to prove just how strong they really are in the Premier League. He said: “It’s got to change next season, They’ve got to be in the running. They can’t win their last 10 games of the season and still finish 10, 11, 12 points behind Chelsea – that’s just not good enough. They just need a couple of players. I don’t know what it is, consistency?”
