Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness remains surprised that Liverpool allowed captain Steve Gerrard to leave the club in the summer, with the former England international to end the season as the Reds’ top scorer, while netting the equaliser in this weekend’s draw against Chelsea.
Gerrard has endured a disappointing campaign that has epitomised Liverpool’s season. The long-serving captain has been inconsistent with his performance, but made a telling contribution against Chelsea, scoring at Stamford Bridge to earn the Merseysiders a deserved share of the spoils.
He was given an ovation by both sets of fans after coming off in the second-half, and after the game former Liverpool, Blackburn and Newcastle manager Graeme Souness was critical of the Merseyside club for allowing him to leave. While Gerrard is getting older, the Sky Sports pundit believes he has plenty to give in a Liverpool shirt, and doesn’t feel there’s anybody ready to replace him.
Likely to end the season as Liverpool’s top scorer, and bagging the equaliser in his last game at Stamford Bridge, Gerrard silences his critics this weekend, but Souness is disappointed not enough was done to make him stay.
He said: I don’t understand why they’re letting him go. I know he wouldn’t be the same Steven Gerrard we’ve seen over the last decade – he’s not going to be 90 minutes, not going to be the game-changer he’s been time and time again. Certainly have him on the bench. I think to bring him on he can certainly swing games. He’s shown that today – he got them back into the game.”
