Manchester City can consolidate second place in the Premier League with victory at White Hart Lane, where they have beaten Tottenham 5-1 in two of the last three seasons.
Although unlikely, the home side are not completely out of the reckoning for a place in the top four, and they will be just five points behind faltering Manchester United should they take maximum points here. To do so, they would have to improve significantly on their last performance on their own turf, when Aston Villa punished collective lethargy.
But four points from two away games since that setback represents a strong return, with a comfortable win at Newcastle United followed by a creditable draw with rivals Southampton. Harry Kane and Nacer Chadli will again provide the biggest goal threat here, but Tottenham’s recent defensive record against City suggests they should be wary.
Despite victories in their last two games at home to West Ham United and Aston Villa, it will be difficult to be convinced by Man City again until they put a sustained run of strong performances and results together. They definitely rode their luck against Tim Sherwood’s side, needing a late winner having been pegged back to 2-2.
An interesting aspect of this match is how Fernando and Fernandinho will go about countering Tottenham’s pressing game, with the likes of Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason unlikely to give him a moment’s peace in midfield. Neither has hit the heights this season, but could have a significant say over where this particular game is won or lost.
Vlad Chiriches is set to play at left-back for Tottenham as Danny Rose is doubtful and Ben Davies is out for the rest of the season.
The visitors are without Yaya Toure due to a thigh strain, while Vincent Kompany and Stevan Jovetic remain absent. However, there could be a return for Gael Clichy at left-back.
