Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is concerned that forward Alexis Sanchez could miss the start of next season depending on Chile’s progress in this summer’s Copa America, the Independent has reported.
Sanchez is set to be called up by his national team following the FA Cup final with Aston Villa on May 30, and the hosts take on Ecuador in the opening match of the competition on June 11.
Should Chile reach the final on July 4, the mandatory break that the former Barcelona star must take would mean that he would be unable to return for the beginning of the new Premier League season, which begins a week earlier that normal on August 8.
The Gunners faced a similar problem at the beginning of this season, with several of their players not returning to the club until late following the World Cup. As a result, their form at the start of the season faltered and they fell a long way behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.
And with Sanchez having made a fine impression so far in English football, Wenger is worried that he may not be available for the next campaign. He said: “That is not good news because they (the Copa America) finish very late and if Chile go very far Sanchez will miss the start of the season.”
