Premier League new boys Bournemouth have wasted no time in strengthening their squad ahead of the new season by signing Chelsea youngster Christian Atsu on a season-long loan from Chelsea, the Daily Star reports.
The Ghanaian international spent last season on loan with Everton, making 13 appearances across all competitions and will now further his development with the side from the south coast.
Having joined Chelsea from Portuguese giants FC Porto in 2013, he has yet to make an appearance for the Premier League champions, but was named as the player of the tournament at this year’s African Cup of Nations.
Cherries chief Eddie Howe expressed his delight at securing his services by saying: “I think he is a player, although he is a younger player, he is a player with outstanding experience when you look at his career he has had.
“He has had a lot thrown at him – Porto, Vitesse, Chelsea, on the international stage – and he’s done very well on the international stage as well.
“We are loaning a player of huge potential, again we had to fight off several other Premier League clubs to get him, so we are very, very pleased.
“I think he will bring pace and ability to beat a man one-v-one which is very important in the Premier League, so for all those reasons I think he is a great signing for us.”
Atsu was playing Champions League football during his time with Porto, and looked set to be a rising star in the game, however, this move to Bournemouth could be seen as a major step back.
The Championship champions are renowned for playing expansive, attacking football, but now at the age of 23 he should be aiming higher.
The lure of regular first team football in the English top flight likely proved to great to resist, and it will be interesting to see how he manages at Dean Court.
