Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that plans are already being put in place should goalkeeper David De Gea decide to move to Real Madrid this summer.
The 24-year-old has been one of United’s best players this season, and one of the main reasons that, despite their struggles early in the season, they have practically secured themselves a spot in the Premier League’s top four, and a place in the Champions League after a year’s absence.
However, according to The Sun, the Spaniard has already agreed personal terms ahead of a £20m move to the Bernabeu.
His current club’s hands could be tied, as De Gea has just one year left on his current contract, so they face losing him for nothing next summer.
As worrying as the news will be to United fans, Louis van Gaal has explained that the club have already drawn up a list of targets, should they lose their number one.
“When we have a good scouting commission we know who already shall be the next goalkeeper,” he said.
“We have a list of goalkeepers who can replace him because we have to be organised, not only for that position but every position,” the Dutchman added.
Former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes has been waiting patiently in the wings since he joined the club in January, and like De Gea, has another year to run on his contract. The 33-year-old has undeniable quality, and may be the closest they will come to filling the large hole that De Gea would leave behind.
