Manchester United are reportedly closing in on their first transfer of the summer, as A Bola reports that the Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan is very close to agreeing a move to Old Trafford.
The report from the Portuguese newspaper suggests that the deal is 80%-90% done, and could well be completed following Friday’s Taca da Liga final, which sees his club aiming for their sixth title in seven years when they go up against Maritimo.
A Bola report that the move could cost around €30m, which may prove quite a bargain for the exciting 27-year-old. But, he may not be the only name heading out of the champions’ door, with the Daily Express reporting on Monday that teammate Eduardo Salvio may also be heading to the Premier League, with Liverpool interested. The Express reveal that Benfica’s financial issues may be the driving factor behind any fast deal for Salvio, so it would not be a surprise should the club also decide to cash in on Gaitan in the near future.

Nevertheless, he would be a major loss for the side. He has played 27 times in the top flight this season, and contributed four goals along the way, including the opener in the draw in the Lisbon derby against Sporting last August.
He is naturally left-footed, but can also play comfortably in the centre or out on the right. And like United’s last great left-footer in Ryan Giggs, he is a fine dribbler too. The difference between the two is that Gaitan is not a quick player. He’s superb technically, creative and a fine passer and striker of the ball, but he won’t be sprinting down the touchline before crossing.
Still, he could be a valuable acquisition for the club.
