Manchester United striker Robin van Persie could be about to follow in the footsteps of Barcelona playmaker Xavi by making a surprise summer move to Qatar.
According to the Daily Mail, the 31-year-old is wanted by Michael Laudrup. The former Swansea man is now the head coach at Lekhwiya, who apparently are willing to offer an extremely lucrative deal to the Netherlands international.
Talks ofVan Persie leaving Old Trafford came about after his current boss Louis van Gaal refused to confirm whether the forward has a future at the club beyond this season, the Mail report.
While the ex-Arsenal star is said to be happy to see out the final year of his deal, he does not want to be rooted to the bench throughout the next campaign.
Despite returning to the injury-plagued days that blighted his early time at the Emirates, Van Persie has still made 27 appearances in the Premier League. Of his United teammates, only Wayne Rooney has bettered his total of 10 goals in the top flight.
If Van Persie is to leave in the summer, then Sunday’s game against Hull will be the final chance for the English game to pay tribute to – when fit – one of the finest marksmen of the last decade.
