Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was angry with his side’s performance after they were easily beaten 3-0 by mid-table Stoke City, Sky Sports has reported.
The Potters dominated the match from start to finish and had come close through Marc Muniesa’s powerful volley before they took a deserved lead on 21 minutes. In-form midfielder Charlie Adam was on hand to head home from close range after a cross had been inadvertently flicked into his path by Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.
A long ball proved to by the Londoners’ undoing 11 minutes later as goalkeeper Hugo Lloris collided with teammate Eric Dier, allowing Steven N’Zonzi to confidently side-foot the ball into an unguarded net for the second.
Spurs offered little in response and went down to 10 men early in the second half as Vlad Chiriches picked up his second yellow card for a foul on Glenn Whelan. The win was then wrapped up late on by Mame Biram Diouf, who helped the ball in at the near post despite pressure from Vertonghen.
After a defeat which saw all hopes of Champions League qualification end mathematically, Pochettino was frustrated with the display and demanded an improvement for the final two games of the season. “I’m disappointed with the result but also disappointed with the performance,” he said.
“I think the two goals we conceded were typical of the way that Stoke play. Two long balls and we made a mistake, this is true. After that it’s difficult to come back into the game, and in the second half when Chiriches got the red card, more difficult too.
“After that I think the team was brave, tried to score. I think we created some good chances and we played in a good way. But it was a little bit late because in the first half our performance was poor. It’s difficult when you give possibilities for the opponent to score. The way they scored and how we conceded the goals makes it difficult to come back into the game.”
