Despite appearing to lead the chase for a long time, Arsenal are ready to pull out of the race to sign Southampton man Morgan Schneiderlin, after refusing to pay the £25m the south coast club want for the 25-year-old.
Arsenal News and Goals
According to the Daily Mail, Arsene Wenger does not believe that the squad needs major strengthening, and is not willing to throw so much at an outfielder. However, the Mail do report that the Gunners still remain keen on Chelsea stopper Petr Cech.
The Mail suggest that Manchester United may now be the Frenchman’s most likely destination, although Louis van Gaal is also keen on Bayern Munich veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Arsenal’s reluctance to pursue the former Strasbourg man highlights Wenger’s growing confidence in Francis Coquelin.
The holding midfielder returned from a loan spell at Charlton earlier in the campaign, after injuries decimated the squad. And while few would have expected him to hold down a first-team spot for a sustained period of time, he has now made himself one of the first names on the teamsheet, despite the number of star faces at the Emirates.
He has provided a balance – much in the same way that his countryman has at St Mary’s – that has allowed the likes of Santi Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez, and Mesut Ozil to play their style of football with much less concern for what will happen should they lose the ball.
While Schneiderlin would have been a good signing for the Gunners, and would have provided some depth to the holding midfield area, there are arguably areas where the side need to add improvement more urgently.
