Chelsea look set to miss out on long time target Mauro Icardi after the striker extended his deal with Inter Milan, the Daily
Chelsea Transfer Gossip
The Argentine striker has been extensively linked with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United recently after they were alerted to a hold up in negotiations to keep him at the San Siro.
However, a statement from the clue said: “FC Internazionale is pleased to announce that Mauro Icardi has inked a new contract with the club.
“The Argentine striker’s new agreement runs until 30 June 2019.”
Icardi, 22, has been rated at £32m by Inter, after ending the season as the Italian top flight’s joint highest goalscorer with 22 strikes.
And despite the club chalking up an underwhelming eighth place finish this term, Icardi stated earlier this week that he would be happy to stay where he is.
“Everybody wants to play in Europe, but I’m happy here with Inter,” Icardi told Sky Sport Italia.
“I hope we can keep getting better and the club are working on building an even more competitive squad next season.
“I’ve always said that I want to stay with Inter. My contract renewal’s not so straightforward, but we are working on it and I’m confident. I think there will be more news in the coming week.
“Hopefully we will reach a point where we can sign and all be more relaxed about things. We will sort it all out soon, at the latest after the holidays.”
Icardi linked up with Inter in the summer of 2013 having made a positive impression on the pitch with Sampdoria. He has since gone on to bag 36 goals in 71 appearances across all competitions for Inter.
However, despite his good recent form, he was not selected by Argentina for the upcoming Copa America tournament.
