Former Manchester United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw has urged his old club to go after Bayern Munich man Manuel Neuer, should they lose David De Gea this summer.
Manchester United News and Goals
According to talkSPORT, the Spaniard is close to returning to the Spanish capital – having joined United from Atletico Madrid – by signing for Real. And in preparation for his departure, Louis van Gaal’s side have been linked with both Chelsea’s Petr Cech and Hugo Lloris of Tottenham.
But, van der Gouw – who made 37 appearances during six years at Old Trafford – believes that the club should set their sights much higher if they wish to adequately replace De Gea.
“It’s very difficult to replace David De Gea because he is exceptional,” he admitted.
“I would say put Manuel Neuer in the goal of Manchester United, that would be good,” he said.
Since emerging on the world stage at the 2010 World Cup, Neuer has become the blueprint for the modern goalkeeper. He is capable to produce scarcely-believable saves – much like De Gea – but also has tremendous technical ability for someone between the sticks.
During Bayern games in the past, he has been seen standing closer to the halfway line than his own goalline, transforming himself into a sweeper, ready to intercept any long balls.
However, United’s defence has been a lot busier than the Bundesliga champions’ this year, so he may have to put the footballing aspect of his game to bed for the time-being, should one the unlikeliest moves of the summer actually happen.
